The Weekly Marketing Report

made by Ellen Henriksson Burén

Period analysed 1–7 August 2026

Last week's headline was wrong and this issue leads with the correction: Svensk Handel's release says lågpris +5.3% and premium +5.5% for June, not budget +9.0% against premium −4.1%. Premium had the better week everywhere it reported — Chanel +16%, Ralph Lauren +14% — while e.l.f. grew +36%, so both ends are growing and there is no tier story. K18 put hair longevity on sale at $120 and made it a category.

About the artwork. Every card carries a drawing of the campaign's central idea, made for this page so the board can be scanned rather than read. None of them is a still from the real creative — they are interpretations of the reading, they are not evidence, and they should never be shown as the work itself or as documentation of it.

About the lead. The cover story of this issue is a correction to No. 31. The figure that carried that issue does not survive its own source, and putting that first is the point.

The record

Trend-tracker movements, data and method notes. Deliberately uncoloured — observations about the evidence, not brands.

Colour carries sector only. Market is a separate, orthogonal dimension and stays a plain chip — Sweden or Int — so the two are never confused. The chart on page two is drawn in the page's own neutrals, bronze against ink, and carries no sector colour.

"Value beat premium" was built on a figure that isn't in the source

W31 led on Swedish fashion retail splitting budget +9.0% against premium −4.1% — same market, same month, opposite directions. Svensk Handel's own press release, published 15 July 2026 and covering June rather than July, reports lågpris +5.3% and premium +5.5%.

Both segments grew, and premium grew slightly faster. Three of the six figures quoted last week do not appear in the primary release, and the month was wrong.

The Value beating premium trend-tracker entry is retracted rather than downgraded — the evidence base for it does not exist. What replaced it is less satisfying and more useful: Chanel +16% and e.l.f. +36% in the same quarter, at opposite ends of the price architecture. There is no tier-level story.

Why it survived a sweep: the number was interesting. A clean, counter-intuitive contrast is exactly the shape of a fact that gets repeated without being checked.

MonthReported as July 2026. The release covers June 2026, published 15 July.
LågprisReported +9.0%. Primary source +5.3%.
PremiumReported −4.1%. Primary source +5.5% — the higher of the two.
ShoesReported +12.1%. Primary source +4.6%. Only the clothing figure, +4.4%, survived unchanged.
Verification effort should scale with how much you want a number to be true.
The method fix — now a third failure mode in the virality playbook

The brand joined something already happening rather than manufacturing a moment. Consistently the more reliable and more learnable case — the insight was free, and the proof of demand preceded the spend.

An in-app storefront for the things people buy without eye contact — laxatives, UTI tests, condoms — merchandised into named aisles, plus a three-episode Cringemaxxing series with Tana Mongeau. The campaign and the product are the same object: the category did not exist until the work created it. DoorDash, with agency Loop.

Independent picks in Ad Age, Muse by Clio (top of 5 Ads of the Week), Marketing Brew, Campaign US, DesignRush and YPulse. Built on published first-party data: 4m+ customers Apr 2025–Apr 2026, a condom every 37 seconds, two laxatives a minute. Miss: no Google Trends signal in US or SE.

The brand manufactured the moment. Legitimate and often well made, but it pays for what the first department got by paying attention — so the bar for calling it a hit is higher.

Vanilla Slushie body scrub, Wild Cherry body wash, two $25 lip kits, early access on TikTok Shop. Pepsi did not lend a logo — it lent a smell, reportedly working through around 3,000 scent variations across international fragrance houses. Domino's extended a taste into a new food format; this transfers a taste into a different sense, which is harder and more defensible. Pepsi × Glamlite.

GeekSpin and consumer press, late July–early August 2026. Product confirmed and dated; no sell-through data published. The idea worth stealing: which non-beauty brand owns a smell it has never licensed?

W32 was the week to test whether Swedish creative activity resumes after semester. It did not show. Rather than pad the section, the honest finding leads it — followed by the one fresh Swedish number and two dated reference cases worth knowing when a Swedish employer asks what you rate.

The empty week

Unverified — blind spot

No Swedish national campaign launch surfaced in any open source this week. What did surface was promotional material — ICA's week-32 leaflets, Åhléns campaign pages. Promotions, not campaigns. The distinction matters, because reading silence as a quiet market is exactly the mistake this section is prone to.

Searches across Swedish agency, brand and campaign terms returned only reklamblad aggregators. Resumé and Dagens Media are closed to automated access, so a quiet market and an invisible one look identical from here. Recorded as a limit on the report, not a finding about the market. Five untested routes now logged in the source list.
