The Weekly Marketing Report

made by Ellen Henriksson Burén

Period analysed 17–23 August 2026

Attention is bought with production now: Nuuly replaced its autumn campaign with a twelve-episode scripted drama, released in four batches of three from 19 August. Frasers bought Harvey Nichols out of pre-pack administration for around £40m, and Kim Kardashian folded SKKN into Skims. The brands that cannot afford to produce are being sold — four indie beauty founders asked social media for a buyer on a single day.

About the artwork. Every card carries a line drawing of the campaign's central idea, made for this page. None of them is a still from the real creative — they are interpretations of the reading, they are not evidence, and they should never be shown as the work itself or as documentation of it.

About the dateline. This is a backfilled edition and says so on every page. The precedent is No. 33, which also carried a retrospective dateline — the difference is the size of the gap. A backfilled issue cannot observe anything in real time, and that limit is stated rather than worked around.

Trend-tracker movements and method notes. Deliberately uncoloured — these are observations about the evidence, not brands.

Colour carries sector only. Market is a separate, orthogonal dimension and stays a plain chip — Sweden or Int. The Sweden page is uncoloured this issue, which is deliberate: with every route verified empty, that page carries an observation about the evidence rather than about any brand, and the key says those pages are the record.

Twelve minutes, four drops

Nuuly did not make an autumn campaign. It commissioned twelve episodes of scripted fictionHeart on My Sleeve, an art teacher looking for love while trying on versions of herself — and released them in four batches of three from 19 August across TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. A named director, a seven-person cast, and an independent social-native agency rather than a film arm bolted onto an ad agency.

The brand is deliberately not the hero. The rental subscription is the constant across every identity shift — structurally necessary to the premise, never the subject of it. Nuuly's senior director of creative and content, Kirsten Henri, gives the reason plainly: “Consumers are fatigued with brands selling hard at them.”

This is the genuinely new brand the tracker has been asking for since No. 31, and it arrives with no audience figure at all. The stated measures are awareness and “shareability”. That is the third consecutive week a brand-owned entertainment project has landed without a number — which, under the rule No. 33 wrote for itself, closes an entry. It does, on page five.

The scarce asset is not the product and it is not the media budget. It is a reason for someone to watch. Nuuly bought that with a production company. Skims already had it. Faace did not, and is for sale.

SKKN by Kim shut and its beauty products moved inside Skims. Read commercially, this is a brand conceding that the hardest thing to build in beauty is not the formula, the packaging or even the name — it is the distribution and the attention, and Skims already has both. The celebrity beauty brand stops being a company and becomes a line extension. It appeared in the same roundup as five fresh celebrity launches, and the two are not in tension: they are the same bet, that attention you already own is the only cheap input left.

The Cost of Catching Up

Page Three

The mechanic worth stealing from this week, drawn. It is a scheduling decision, not a creative one — and it is the part any brand can copy.

Never more than twelve minutes behind

Nuuly released twelve one-minute episodes in four batches of three. A viewer who discovers the series at any point can be fully current in the time it takes to make coffee.

Why this is the chart. Branded fiction's real problem is not making it, it is getting anyone to start. A single film gives a campaign one discovery moment; a daily serial demands a commitment a rental subscription has not earned. Four batches of three gives four chances to be found, and sizes each one so that a newcomer experiences a series rather than an advert seen once. Release in batches sized so that catching up is cheaper than deciding not to — it applies to any episodic owned content, a newsletter series or a product-education sequence as much as a drama. The caveat: everything above is structure. Nuuly published no view, engagement or subscription figure at all, and its stated measures are awareness and “shareability”. A format this well built and this unmeasured is exactly the shape of the entry that closes on page five.

Page Four

The other route to attention, and the faster one. Rent an audience that already exists — cheaper, more measurable, and it leaves the brand owning nothing afterwards.

Six franchises — Halo: Campaign Evolved, Fallout 76, Forza Horizon 6, Overwatch, World of Warcraft and Candy Crush — each inspiring part of a limited-edition menu, with in-game rewards attached, across McDonald's UK and Ireland. Where Nuuly built an audience by making something watchable, McDonald's rented six that already exist. Both are production plays; only one requires the brand to be interesting on its own. The borrowed route is faster, more measurable and far less likely to fail — and it leaves nothing owned behind. That Side Missions is back for a second year is the argument for it: the platform is McDonald's, the IP rotates.

The dated /beslut/ listing shows decisions on 13 August — SkyShowtime and Hundcoachen — and then nothing until 31 August. No ruling falls inside this week. That is a result, not a failure. Route 3 failed to load in Nos. 32 and 33; this time it loaded and returned an eighteen-day silence. It also sets up what comes next: the cluster of rulings the series will record in early September sits immediately after that silence, which confirms what the case-ID dating rule already implied. RO's output is a decision calendar with gaps, not a stream. A quiet RO week says nothing about the Swedish market. A busy one says nothing either.

Hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and peptides moving into base makeup; lightweight coverage, SPF and a natural finish, with growth attributed to women over 45. A category direction reported by one trade title, with no sales data, no brand named as proof and no time series. Plausible and consistent with everything else in this issue — which is exactly why it needs a second source before it becomes a tracker entry.
