The Weekly Marketing Report

made by Ellen Henriksson Burén

Period analysed 28 September to 4 October 2026

Swedish shops sold more in August than in any month on record, households are the most confident since 2021, and ICA says its customers came back because its food prices fell further than the VAT cut. Nike went the other way: a wider margin, four per cent less sales and a smaller year. The customer comes back where the price visibly falls.

+6.9%Swedish retail volume in August against a year earlier, the highest level SCB has ever measured
+4.8%ICA Sverige's grocery sales in May to August, with its food prices down 6.7%, so roughly a tenth more goods
−4%Nike's revenue in its first quarter, while its gross margin rose to 42.8% and the year was cut
+27.8%Swedish health care articles and cosmetics in August, the fastest growing branch of retail

The record

Trend-tracker movements and method notes. Deliberately uncoloured: these are observations about the evidence, not brands.

Colour carries sector only. Market is a separate, orthogonal dimension and stays a plain chip, Sweden or Int, so the two are never confused. The chart on page three is drawn in the page's own neutrals, bronze for the one bar the page is about and ink for the rest, and carries no sector colour.

About the artwork. Every picture in this issue is a photograph generated for this page with GPT Image 2.5 via Higgsfield, as in Nos. 38 and 39: eight plates opening the pages, numbered I to VIII, and one on each of the 45 find cards. All are held to one register: porcelain ground, one soft daylight source, bronze and champagne, no lettering and no identifiable face. The record's cards are greyscale on purpose, the same rule that keeps them uncoloured everywhere else. None of them is a still from the real creative. They are interpretations of the reading, they are not evidence, and they should never be shown as the work itself or as documentation of it.

Page One · The lead

The customer comes back

No. 39 ended on profit without the customer: H&M, ASOS and General Mills repairing their margins from the inside while volume stood still. This week supplied what happens next, and it split by country. In Sweden, where the food VAT was halved and ICA cut further still, the customer came back in a way the statistics have never recorded. SCB put August retail volume 6.9% above a year earlier, the highest level since measurement began, and ICA sold 4.8% more in kronor with prices 6.7% lower: roughly a tenth more goods.

In the US, Nike showed where margin repair goes without a price signal to pull people in. Its gross margin rose to 42.8%, its sales fell 4%, the year was cut and a cost programme announced. Conagra held its prices, spent 15% more on advertising, bought four times the impressions, and still lost 2.1% of volume.

The lesson is narrower than "cut prices". The customers who returned did so to a price they could see and believe, backed by a public story everyone had read about. A brand that has spent two years taking margin needs a visible reason to be chosen again. This week, price was the reason that worked, and advertising alone had not yet shown that it does.

Sigourney Weaver narrates a ten minute nature documentary in which the endangered species is the couch-bound human. The insight is Asics' own survey of 34,000 people in 31 countries: we spend 86% of our waking day not moving. It answers a mood that already existed (screen time anxiety, measured by Pew the same week) and avoids both failures of fitness advertising, the athlete nobody identifies with and the guilt nobody watches. Released ahead of World Mental Health Day, 10 October. The week's model brief; see the report's Worth studying.

Level 4 · editorial consensus, Adweek and Muse; no audience figure

A 30 minute game show on YouTube in which 30 superfans face four tests for a £50k prize and the title Ultimate Believer, an extension of KFC's three year Believe in Chicken platform. It is the only campaign on both Adweek's and Muse's lists this week, which is level 4 by consensus: two editors agreeing, not an audience moving. KFC says 9.8m people responded to the casting call. That is a casting figure, not a viewing figure, and it does not reopen the brand-owned entertainment entry.

Level 5 · official statistics

SCB: retail volume in August +0.8% on the month and +6.9% on the year, "den högsta uppmätta nivån sedan mätningarna startade" (the highest level since measurement began). The day before, household confidence rose 3.8 points to 102.2, the highest since December 2021, with retail confidence at 112.1. One caution from the same survey: households say it is the wrong time to buy durables and are saving more than normal.

Revenue $11.2bn, −4%; gross margin 42.8%, +60bp; Nike Direct −8% with digital −13%; Greater China −22%; Converse −28%; North America +2%. The year cut to a high single digit decline, and Pace targets $2.5bn of savings with fewer jobs. Running grew double digits and World Cup kits doubled, so the brand still sells where it has a reason to be chosen.
