The Weekly Marketing Report

made by Ellen Henriksson Burén

Period analysed 5 to 11 October 2026

Coop cut the price of more than 600 everyday items and admitted it had been seen as expensive. PepsiCo, which cut its snack prices in February, got its volume back this quarter but not its revenue, and lowered its profit forecast. Price brings the customer back; the brands that grew this week sold a reason.

−6.9%Coop's average price cut on more than 600 everyday items at every Stora Coop, by TT's count (Direkt: 6.5%)
+0.5%PepsiCo's organic volume in the third quarter, against price up 3% and a lower profit forecast
24bnKronor of grocery sales Svensk Handel expects weight loss medicines to take in Sweden from 2026 to 2035
+44.1%Aritzia's revenue in its second quarter, with a wider margin even without tariff refunds

The record

Trend-tracker movements and method notes. Deliberately uncoloured: these are observations about the evidence, not brands.

Colour carries sector only. Market is a separate, orthogonal dimension and stays a plain chip, Sweden or Int, so the two are never confused. The chart on page three is drawn in the page's own neutrals, bronze for the one bar the page is about and ink for the rest, and carries no sector colour.

About the artwork. Every picture in this issue is a photograph generated for this page with GPT Image 2.5 via Higgsfield, as in Nos. 38 to 40: eight plates opening the pages, numbered I to VIII, and one on each of the 48 find cards. All are held to one register: porcelain ground, one soft daylight source, bronze and champagne, no lettering and no identifiable face. The record's cards are greyscale on purpose, the same rule that keeps them uncoloured everywhere else. None of them is a still from the real creative. They are interpretations of the reading, they are not evidence, and they should never be shown as the work itself or as documentation of it.

The price of coming back

No. 40 found the customer coming back where the price visibly fell. This week showed the bill. PepsiCo cut Lay's and Doritos by up to 15% in February. In its third quarter North American food organic volume rose 0.5%, price fell 1%, revenue stood still, and the company cut its profit forecast and promised more cost cuts. Lamb Weston grew North American volume 7% while price and mix fell, partly in a shift toward private label. In Sweden, Coop cut more than 600 everyday items by 6.9%, and its chief executive said it plainly: "Vi har inom vissa områden uppfattats som dyra" (in some areas we have been seen as expensive).

Where growth came with margin, there was a specific reason to buy. Aritzia grew 44% and widened its margin even without its tariff refund. Tesco's premium Finest grew 8.9% in the same report as about 700 Aldi price matches. Arla moved an existing chocolate milk under its protein brand, sold 64% more and won Grocery Product of the Year.

Price buys a place back on the shopping list. It does not buy growth, and the list itself is getting shorter: Svensk Handel expects weight loss medicines to take SEK 24bn out of Swedish grocery by 2035. The brands that grow from here sell a reason, not a discount.

Photograph: a cream paper price tag tied to the handle of a woven basket of bread, apples and leeks on a marble counter, a brass coin beside it.

Plate I · The new price. A full basket and a fresh tag. The customer came back to the price; the question this week was what that cost.

A black and white horror film set in fifteenth century Italy: a hole in the ground swallows the villagers' prized possessions, then sprays coffee and chocolate oats into their faces. It answers a food trend that already exists, tiramisu on about 15% more UK menus than a year ago by Tastewise's count, and it borrows the Halloween register without saying Halloween. A small brand riding a flavour the market made popular, which is the cheaper and safer half of the board.

Behind the estimate: 84% of users buy less food after starting, and their food spending falls 6.8% on average over the next six months. Fashion and beauty are expected to gain. Coop did not say it was cheaper. It said it had been seen as expensive. That is a marketing sentence.

Level 4 · Adweek Ads of the Week, Famous Campaigns, MediaPost

Close up photographs of hands posed to look like bare bottoms, on bus shelters, wrapped buses and in Times Square, with the line "No ifs, ands or butts." The launch paid a gossip account: a sponsored DeuxMoi post on 2 October showed what looked like a reality star's bare backside, and it was his hand. By the brand's account New York transit judged the posters too risqué for the subway, and the refusal became the story. Adweek put it in its Ads of the Week on 9 October, and within a day Goodwipes parked rival billboards beside it. It tried to start culture by imitating a leak, a format celebrity culture already trusts. No audience figure.

SEK 24bn less food

Level 4 · trade body forecast with survey data

Svensk Handel estimates that weight loss medicines will take SEK 24bn out of Swedish grocery sales over 2026 to 2035, between 18 and 37 depending on uptake. 84% of users buy less food after starting, and their food spending falls 6.8% over six months. Fashion and beauty are expected to benefit. Sofia Larsen: "Att den ökade användningen av viktminskningsmedicin har en stor påverkan på handeln är självklart, men underrapporterat" (obvious, but under-reported).
